David's Recordings Accordion Books Recordings by FootLoose David DiGiuseppe
|
An instrumentalist, singer and storyteller, David DiGiuseppe's musical career began at the tender age of three in the local barber shop, where he was often lifted onto a chair and encouraged to sing his favorite songs. At the impressionable age of eight, he was taking accordion lessons, becoming a model student at Petteruti's School of Music in Providence, RI. By twelve, the accordion was in the closet and Beatles' tunes could be heard emanating from his guitar. Since that auspicious beginning, David has gone on to perform as a soloist and with numerous groups. He is an accomplished and versatile singer, accordionist, mandolinist, Irish cittern player and storyteller. A nationally recognized accordionist, DiGiuseppe is known for his fiery and emotive playing. He is equally at home performing Irish tunes in a pub, French musettes in a cabaret, contra or Cajun music for a dance, or in the intimate setting of a concert hall. David currently tours the US with the New England-style contra dance band FootLoose and also performs locally with the contra band Contrazz. With bassist Robbie Link and percussionist Beverly Botsford, he leads the David D Trio, performing Brazilian choros, Argentinean tangos, the swing musettes of Paris, and the dance tunes of the Celtic cultures. He also performs in a duo with guitarist/singer Danny Gotham. As a singer and storyteller, David presents programs for schools, arts councils, libraries and museums throughout the Carolinas, offering fun, family concerts and educational lecture/performances on American and Carolina history. He also leads workshops for educators on teaching history through the study of traditional music. David began playing professionally in 1978 while living in Worcester, MA. Never content at doing too much of the same thing, from 1978-85 he performed with: Steamfoot, a bluegrass band; Castle Hill String Band, bluegrass and jug band music; Musique Noveaux, avant-garde classical; Two Finger Snap, acoustic jazz quartet; the Providence Mandolin Orchestra and the Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra. In 1985 he moved to Durham, NC where for three years he toured and recorded with the well-loved Big Zucchini Washboard Bandits, performing throughout the United States and Canada. Since then he has performed with nationally acclaimed Cajun singer and songwriter J.J. Reneaux, singer and songwriter Jonathan Byrd, flutist Mike Casey, the Irish music trio Kiltartan Cross, the Band of Ages, and was a founding member of the Landfill Ramblers. David is featured on a number of recordings, including his newest release Movin' on, his second CD Welcome to Heaven..., and his first solo recording South of Andromeda. With the band FootLoose, he has four recordings--the new release Trip to the Moon, Everdance, Steppin' Out and FootLoose. David has published two books with Mel Bay Publications. 100 Tunes for Piano Accordion is an extensive collection of reels, jigs, hornpipes and polkas from the French Canadian, Cape Breton, Scottish, Shetland, New England, and Southern Old Time traditions. David's first book 100 Irish Tunes for Piano Accordion is a collection of traditional Irish music arranged for the accordion. Mel Bay Publications will soon be releasing David's next book, which will be a complete guide to playing the accordion's bass buttons. In 1989 David received an Emerging Artists Grant from the Durham (NC) Arts Council to study Irish accordion styles with the noted Irish American musician Jimmy Keane.
